  1. A Herculean Labor

Antonio Pollaiolo, Hercules and the Hydra, c. 1475, tempera on panel.  Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

This painting has always made me laugh, from Hercules’ wind-filled Nemean lion cape to the ridiculously strange hydra.  Even more remarkable is the scale, a mere 6.9 x 4.7 inches!
