  1. Monsieur, Your Codpiece is Showing

Le Dîner du Général from the Fruits de la Guerre tapestry series, designed by Julles Romain (Gobelins) based on a painting by François Bonnemer, 1685-1686. Mobilier national, Paris Le Dîner du Général from the Fruits de la Guerre tapestry series, designed by Julles Romain (Gobelins) based on a painting by François Bonnemer, 1685-1686.  Mobilier national, Paris

The codpiece is perhaps one of the most WTF fashion accessories ever (along with the ruff and the corset).  Codpiece derives from the English word ‘cod,’ meaning ‘scrotum,’ thus the flap or pouch covers a man’s crotch and emphasizes his manhood.  In the tapestry above, the soldier’s codpiece protrudes from a slit in his tunic - talk about easy access!  The servant at left appears startled as the older man grabs the pilgrim flask of wine and attempts to make a gesture referring to logical thought.

    Here’s the full tapestry below.

Another WTF scene occurs at the far right, where a soldier, perhaps also drunk, is about to whop a servant on the head (from the looks of it the servant has been hit before).  Did you also notice the guys carrying animals (sheet, pig, rooster, and a duck)?  The one at right carries a leg of beef or venison!  WTF right?!?
