  1. Stairway to Heaven

A sculpture by Eugenio Merino caused quite a stir of controversy in 2010 at the ARCO International Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid.  Find out why.

A Jewish rabbi, a Catholic priest, and a Muslim worshiper all pray according to their individual customs: standing, kneeling, and face down, respectively.  Stacked one on top of the other, many have read into the meaning of this piece, with Judaism standing proud on top, Islam crushed on the bottom, and Catholicism smashed in between.  But upon closer observation, each man is accompanied by the sacred scripture of one of the other religions.  The rabbi holds the Koran, the Catholic priest holds the Torah, and the Muslim worshiper prostrates next to the Bible.

The sculpture is considered by some to be anti-Semitic, while the artist and others claim that instead, the piece demonstrates the commonality between the three faiths, which Spain’s own history can attest.  Read more about this controversy here or an interesting blog post here.

Perhaps we should consider another work by Merino, All You Need is Love.  I think the piece speaks for itself and can possibly help clear up any misunderstanding with Stairway to Heaven.  P.S. I love the song references in Merino’s works.
