I have been waiting to write this entry for almost one year and today, February 1, I finally have the chance to share one of the great WTF moments from a medieval Book of Hours (a book of prayers and pictures).
The present manuscript was made for the Jean, the Duke of Berry, who had a salacious appetite for titillating images. In the detail from the February calendar page (above), three peasants warm themselves by the fire. Scenes like this were typically represented for February, which was/is in most parts of Europe a very cold month. But take a closer look at the two peasants in the back, the man and the woman… They are really trying to keep warm. He’s warming his willy and she’s toasting her tunnel of love (aka that other “t” word…).
Take a look at the full miniature below and have a happy start to February!
Also, check out an entry from July, 2011 showing the calendar page for that month from the same manuscript.
